Eagles’ Magic Carpet Ride Ends In Loss to Saints: The Morning After

Good morning campers,

Good morning campers,

Well, everything must come to an end, and I know some of you are STILL beyond mad about what happened yesterday.

While I am, of course, unhappy about the result, too… I am not here to bury the Birds. I realize some of you, perhaps, are expecting me to go off in this final TMA on a profanity-laced rant—but, that’s not going to happen.

For one thing, I don’t use profanity, at least not in this forum. And secondly, while I will rip some individuals, I am very proud of what this team accomplished this year.

Let’s get to getting…

Paging Joe Carter

Gonna start off here with a comparison to a completely different team in a completely different sport. Let me take you back to 1993 for a minute. There was a baseball team put together that year that was comprised of a bunch of ragtag players; an island of misfit toys. And I, as do many of you, believe destiny was derailed that year.

That team was supposed to win the World Series. Period. But something happened on the way to heaven, and finger of fate stepped in when it had no business doing so. Someone, some place in the universe pushed the wrong button; someone screwed up. Image result for 1993 phillies macho row: somethinginthewudder.com

I think this is perhaps what happened with the 2018 Philadelphia Eagles. Yes, I realize many reading this will think this is just another Philly fan crying sour milk. No, nothing of the kind.

With all objectivity, I believe this Eagles team, with all its subplots and back stories, were supposed to win another Super Bowl. But, as I mentioned, someone, some place pushed the wrong button; someone screwed up. Destiny got derailed.

I Know Mitchell Trubisky, And You Are No…

Let’s cut right to the chase, kids. This was not Mitchell Trubisky, and this was not the Chicago Bears. This was a Hall of Fame QB and the New Orleans Saints. This was the #1 seed in the conference. Last week, a Nick Foles interception turned the game completely around; the momentum shifted. However, as we know, the Eagles recovered.

This week, another Nick Foles interception turned the game completely around and the momentum shifted. The difference? This wasn’t Mitchell Trubisky and this was not the Chicago Bears. An oversimplification? Of course it was.

But the fact of the matter is, this was a battle-tested QB and head coach, who did not panic after being down 14-0 before everyone in the Superdome had even reached their seats.

The Offense Was Offensive

I have no idea what the final stats showed in terms of what the Eagles offense was able to muster up following their second TD, but I can tell you, it wasn’t much. And more than anything, this was the #1 reason the Eagles lost. Please spare me the ‘But what about Alshon’s drop?!’

Much like last week with Bears fans placing 100% of the blame on Cody Parkey, there was much more to this loss than one single dropped pass, just as there was much more to the loss by the Bears than one single missed kick.

This was an offensive loss en masse. Plenty of blame to go around, including the play caller (AKA: Doug Pederson). And yes Virginia, Nick Foles is human. Following the Eagles second TD up until the final drive (again, not knowing specific numbers), St. Nick was downright bad. The look on his face said a lot.

But, he did regain that mojo one final time on the last drive and he had that look again. But, as I mentioned earlier, someone, somewhere in the dark corners of the universe, screwed up. Destiny got derailed.

Commercial Break

Someone help me here. Is it that big of a deal that Bud Light will now list its ingredients on the outside of cases and that GMC pickups will now have a tailgate that does everything but make coffee? What am I missing here? I guess in Bud Light’s case, it’s based on the press release that came out just two days ago, which announced to the world that Bud Light “became the first beer in the United States to add a comprehensive on-pack serving facts and ingredient label.”

Who knew? Apparently not me. Guess that comes with being the non-drinker that I am.

The Schwartz Must Go

I know some, if not many, will take umbrage with what I am about to say but…Jim Schwartz must be relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator. Yes, I know as well as you do that the Eagles secondary was decimated for a good part of the season, which the Schwartz truthers use to defend the fact that their guy did not blitz very much.

‘You can’t blitz and leave these young guys on an island.’

The one hole in that theory is this: The Eagles secondary was NOT depleted the entire season, yet Schwartz was steadfast in his rushing of only 4 and dropping 7 into coverage. He employed this method when the entire starting secondary was on the field.

Because he is stubborn, that’s why. He believes in his system which is fine, of course, but you have to be willing to make adjustments if something is not working. It’s human nature isn’t it? If something is not working, you try something different, no?

I think for the best of the team, the Eagles need to part ways with Schwartz and bring in an aggressive coordinator that is capable of making in-game adjustments.

So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday

As is the case following ANY season, there will be changes to the roster. Of course, the most notable name on the list of To-Be-Former Eagles is Foles. He will absolutely always be a legend in Philly. The man has a statue already. But the time has come for this to truly become Carson Wentz’s team.

Another one who will more than likely go is Brandon Graham. I surely hope he is able to stay because I think he still has a lot left in the tank. As he’s shown, Graham is a player who comes up big on the biggest stage. But this is a business as we all know, so we shall see.

Other free agents include:

*Jay Ajayi

*Darren Sproles

*Golden Tate

*Ronald Darby

*Jordan Hicks

*Chris Long

Of this list, my preference would be to keep Sproles, Tate and Darby if I had to choose just a few vs. keeping all of them.

Closing Thoughts

I am truly proud of what this team accomplished this year. It was a roller-coaster ride of near epic proportions, with all of us writing them off after being 4-6 after ten games. Yet somehow, they found a way on the last weekend of the season to make it into the dance. And then they took us on more wild ride vs. the Bears. Who will ever forget that frozen moment when we thought Cody Parkey’s kick went OVER the cross the bar?

I know I will never forget that moment. That was house money as far as I was concerned.

The future is incredibly bright for this team, and I say so based mostly on #11 – Carson Wentz. He will return to the MVP form he showed in 2017 and this team WILL be back. Book it.

‘Til next year…
