Admit it, John Tortorella would be loved in Philadelphia

Now before I start this article, I preface it by saying there is no other coach in the NHL I would rather have running the Philadelphia Flyers than Peter Laviolette.

However, if the time ever comes when Laviolette is no longer at the helm of the orange and black, Rangers head coach John Tortorella would have no problem coaching in the city of brotherly love.

Stanley Cup Winning Coach

Until this season, most Flyers fans know Tortorella as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who beat the Flyers in the Eastern Conference Finals on their way to winning the Stanley Cup in 2004. During the series, Tortorella managed to get into a war of words with then-Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock. It was then when I began to refer to Tortorella as “Fonzie” for his eerie resemblance to actor Henry Winkler.

The HBO series 24/7 series leading up to the Winter Classic between the Flyers and Rangers gave everyone a behind the scenes glimpse of Tortorella, a no-nonsense coach whose fiery demeanor and occasional outbursts with the media have made him one of the NHL’s most colorful personalities.

Philadelphians are known for calling it as they see it, and last Thursday Tortorella had no problems whatsoever telling the media exactly how he felt about Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpikâ’s knee-on-knee hit on the Rangers Derek Stepan after the game.

“That’s one of the most arrogant organizations in the league,” Tortorella said. “They whine about this stuff all the time, and look what happens. It’s ridiculous. But they’ll whine about something else over there, won’t they? Starting with their two (insert expletive here) stars.”

The following clip is so great that nothing I type here can justify how awesome Tortorella’s words really are.

Now make no mistake, I despise the New York Rangers with a passion. Normally, I wouldn’t support anything that organization says or does. In saying that, I can give credit where credit is due, so Kudos for Tortorella for taking a stand against the Penguins organization. Tortorella was fined $20,000 for his actions by the NHL, but that’s chump change for him, and it’s about time the Penguins are called out for being nothing but a bunch of crybabies and whiners. Tortorella pulls no punches and keeps it real. Just the kind of guy we like in our city.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t keep it real if the Flyers have to face the Rangers come playoff time.

Here is a clip of the Top 10 John Tortorella moments as ranked by ESPN. Alright, after this, no more praising the opposition. Promise. .
