Google’s Topeka Kansas prank shows people still fall for April Fool’s jokes

Google has apparently pulled a fast one on some people by changing their name to Topeka.

Google has apparently pulled a fast one on some people by changing their name to Topeka.

There’s an old adage that a sucker is born every minute, the infamous phrase attributed to P.T. Barnum.  Google’s April Fool’s Prank where they changed their name to Topeka (as in Topeka, Kansas) actually fooled some folks today.

How do I know this? One of the top Google search trends today is “is google really changing its name?”  Another top search is “why does google say topeka?

To quote SNL’s Seth Myers….REALLY? Really people? Do you realize it’s April Fool’s Day today?

If Google were changing their name we’d hear about said impending name change months in advance.

Google’s annual tradition is to pull off fun light-hearted April Fool’s pranks. They chose to call themselves Topeka after the Mayor of Topeka, Kansas said he’d change Topeka’s name to Google for the month of March.

Over the years Google’s annual April Fool’s jokes have been far-ranging.  In 2000 they announced Mentalplex-a technology that supposedly reads the user’s mind to determine what the user wanted to search for.  In 2005, they introduced the Google Gulp drink, which would optimize one’s use of Google.  Probably their most ludicrious prank occurred in 2006 when Google Romance was “launched” on April Fool’s.

With the Topeka prank, Google has shown why they’re still ahead of the curve.  They can even get people to believe they changed their name on April Fool’s Day.

  1. There will be always some

There will be always some stupid people who will believe in whatever you’ll tell them. I would say that Google’s case is not the worst. Every single year on the 1st of April many websites are trying to foolish their visitors and sometimes people believe in absolutely stupid things. But you know what? At least it’s fun. I don’t see anything wrong in that till it’s fun. Thanks for the great post here and we will be waiting what joke google will come up with this year. Fool’s day is not so far now. Thanks!
