Philadelphia Fashion Week Preview

With the recent popularity of TV shows like America’s Next Top Model or Stacey and Clinton’s What Not to Wear, as well as films like The Devil Fashion WeekWears Prada (granted it was a best-selling book, first), fashion has firmly positioned itself in the American household.

And now, fashion has firmly positioned itself in Philadelphia, as it will soon be home to a three-day celebration of fashion, October 8th-10th known as Philadelphia Fashion Week. Taking place at the 23rd Street Armory, this fashion celebration will also feature food, drink, arts and culture.

“Philadelphia Fashion Week will showcase who we are and what we wear,” said Charlie Smith, Philadelphia Fashion Week Director of Productions.

Doors open at 4pm for cocktails and shopping, followed by runway shows starting at 5pm that lead up to the headlining concerts at 8pm. Designers include Palmieri Jeans, Delicious, Street Star Custom Clothing, Strangefruit, Commonwealth Proper, Marina Makaron Moscow, SA VA—all based in Philadelphia. Other designers such as Parke & Ronen, S. LOVE, Triple 5 Soul, Brooklyn Royalty and Kill City will also be represented. Entertainment to accompany these shows will include Philadelphia musicians: Black Landlord, The Model, DJ Bonics, DJ Phsh, Tu Phace, DJ Dirty, and The Hustle.

The City of Philadelphia officially recognized “Philadelphia Fashion Week” at a press conference on September 17th at Macy’s Grand Court in Center City. City Representative Melanie Johnson presented the official city recognition with the hopes that Philadelphia Fashion Week will help boost retail sales in Philadelphia and enhance the city’s green initiatives.

“We have our own chic right here in Philadelphia,” exclaimed Johnson. “People outside the city may not know about some of our boutique shops and retail stores, but the sad thing is that people right here don’t know about it.”

To achieve these goals, Philadelphia Fashion Week will feature 12 pop-up boutiques with street wear and contemporary couture, and highlight some Philadelphian talents. It is also taking measures to be as green as possible.

Philadelphia Fashion Week recently revealed the first-ever “Student Design Award” for works created by students from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Moore College of Art & Design, and Philadelphia University. During each night of the Philadelphia Fashion Week’s three-day event, students will present 30 designs to kick-off the runway shows. On Saturday, October 10th Macy’s will announce the winner of the Student Design Award, who will have a chance to show their looks for spring/summer 2010 in an encore runway performance at Macy’s Grand Court on October 13th.

“Philadelphia’s vibrant arts and culture scene serves as an excellent source of inspiration for the students participating in Philadelphia Fashion Week,” said Mayor Michael Nutter.

Tickets are available online at PhiladelphiaFashionWeek.org. Advance purchase costs: general admission, $75 per day or $150 for a three-day pass; VIP tickets are exclusively available online for $500 per day or $1500 for a three-day pass. Only general admission tickets will be available on site for $100 per day.
