Constitution Day-Why not every day?

-

So today is Constitution Day. Yeah and… no seriously, what exactly does that mean? And why do we choose one day to “celebrate” it? I realize it was signed on September 17, 1787. So this is the official anniversary of that historic event in United States history, but…

I once wrote a piece about 6 months after September 11th called “Where Have All the Flags Gone?”

It essentially spoke to the fact that just a mere 6 months after the worst attack on United States soil, the feeling of patriotism that engulfed our nation was apparently gone. Immediately following 9/11 of course we all dusted off our flags and displayed them prominently for the whole world to see.

And 6 months later they were right back in the closet and in the drawer and in the garage.

Why?

Quick. How many of you can recite the preamble to the Constitution?

Time’s up.

Don’t Google it. I’ll save you the trouble.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

So what exactly does that mean? And what does the Constitution really mean? Isn’t it all just a bunch of words we were forced to learn and remember in school else we fail our Social Studies exam?

No. No. No.

To quote David Byrne of The Talking Heads… “This ain’t no party. This ain’t no disco.”

This is like Coca-Cola in the 1970s, baby… this is the real thing.

Simply put… The Constitution is the most important document in the United States. Period. It established our government and our position as a democracy. It pretty much said to the rest of the world back in 1787 “hey yo, you know that country you’ve been reading about on your blueberry… what’s it called, the United States of America? Yeah, well these boys ain’t no joke.”

We now take this all for granted. Admit it. You do it. I do it.

But today at some point, stop and actually read and re-read the words, not to the whole document even, just the Preamble and think… I mean really think about the magnitude and scope of those words.

Now, if we can only get Kanye West and Taylor Swift to have a more perfect union…

  1. Good stuff, Steve

Somewhere along the line we’ve lost our sense of history and connection with the framers of our constitution. Those folks knew exactly what they were doing and somehow anticipated many of the threats to our democracy we now face far better than we seem to recognize them ourselves. Thank you for encouraging us to reconnect with our roots.
