Under Rug Swept?

Close your eyes and guess who said this way back when:

“I think that the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black. I don’t believe he could have won had he been white. And the reason is, I think it was a cynical ploy by President Bush.”

Close your eyes and guess who said this way back when:

“I think that the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black. I don’t believe he could have won had he been white. And the reason is, I think it was a cynical ploy by President Bush.”

 Strom Thurmond?

 Trent Lott?

 Another “evil” Republican?

The answer to that question is actually Joe Biden. The same Joe Biden who is now the vice-president in the Obama administration. The same Obama administration that dared threatened anyone who would critique Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor‘s controversial comments regarding her race.

How these comments have gone relatively unpublished in the press escapes me. However, is there any doubt that if someone on the right said that “the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black,” that it would make major headlines?

Or consider this statement from the New York Times: “The hot-button issue of year-end bonuses from firms that took bailout money may not just be a headache for Wall Street. It could also become a White House problem.

Several members of the (intentionally left blank) administration worked for financial companies that received bailout funds, raising the question of whether they should keep any bonus they received. “

How would the media respond if the name left blank was Bush? Again, this would be a major story. Every talking head on MSNBC’s head would spin if they learned about this. The Huffington Post would have to go off-line because of the bandwith it would use discussing this mantra. But it was not the Bush administration who employed people who received bonuses from bailed out companies. It was people who worked under Barack Obama. The same Barack Obama who promised us the most ethical administration in the history of American politics. Three of his employees received bailouts. Yet, curiously, the only mention of this came on a blog well-hidden on the New York Times’ website.

Or consider this scenario:

A high-ranking administration official was on the board of directors of a major corporation which, under his watch, committed major accounting fraud. Years later, the rule-bending practices of this firm would force the government to bail it out.

If high ranking administration was “Karl Rove” or “Andrew Card” or “Dick Cheney,” or if the company was named Haliburton, there would be riots in the streets.

But the high-ranking administration official in question is Rahm Emmanuel, President Obama’s right-hand man. And the company in question is Fannie Mae. The same Fannie Mae that donated countless dollars to Barack Obama’s political coiffeurs.

Close your eyes once again and ask if this is really hope and change we can believe in.
